Voter Registration - Our First Order of Business!
When people answer their front door, I smile and say "Hello. I'm a volunteer for the 2008 presidential PRIMARY election. Are you planning on voting in the primaries? If so, I have voter registration forms with me.
Most people say they are already registered to vote, but the truth is almost none of them understand the specific requirements and guidelines for their particular state. They think they do, but they don't. In fact, most of them don't even know the date of their primary election. And many can't remember if they are registered as independent, republican, or democrat.
It gets worse. Only a small percentage of registered voters have ever voted in the primaries. Truth is, I'm one of them. Just like most of us, I've always waited until the general election, and then had to choose between the lesser of two evils. Sound familiar?
OK, we can/must change this.
The general election will take care of itself. If Paul wins the republican nomination, you and I know he will win the general election in a landslide victory. Our business at their front door is all about the primaries.
I live in California. My job is to know my state deadlines, primary date, registration deadlines, and open or closed primary rules. They have questions, I have answers. So, call or visit your county Registrar Of Voters office, and get up to speed right now. While you are there, pick-up the 1,000 voter registration forms that you told them on the phone you're coming to get. In my county I have to fill-out and sign a simple form before they hand over the FREE forms.
No problem. I sign it. And I state that the purpose of getting the forms is for a voter registration drive for the presidential election. Then I agree in writing that the registration forms will be given to any & all potential voters, regardless of party affiliation or choice of candidate. And I do it.
California has a closed primary. One must be registered as republican to vote for Ron Paul in the primaries. No exceptions. Registered Independents and Democrats can't help us.
So....
I always make an effort to leave at least two voter registration forms with them.
Even if they say they are already registered, I tell them that they or their kids/family/friends may need them, so please take them anyway.
Voter registration is always my FIRST order of business. If you don't do this, you are wasting your time and theirs.
Show them how to fill out the form. Why & how to change their party affiliation. Show them how to tear-off and retain the bottom portion of the form.
Tell them the Registrars Office suggests that they fold the pre-stamped, pre-addressed form in half, and put a small piece of tape at the bottom to insure the form doesn't get torn-up by the post office.
Then I explain about the importance of the primaries. I tell them how few & precious every primary vote is. How this is their historic opportunity to choose who will represent them in the general election.
Having done this first, I'm now ready to introduce them to my hero. I've set the stage to explain why I volunteered to invest my time to with them face-to-face.
I tell them I've never done this before, or ever thought I would.
I'm here because of the mess in Washington.
Our country is on the wrong track and we have a candidate who knows what to do.
He upholds the constitution, lives by it, and believes it is our road map to freedom.
We have a remarkable person who wants to be our next president.
He's always been his own man, and my family and I support him 100%.
Millions of other people also support him.
His name is Ron Paul! Etc, etc.
Ron has reminded us many times that we are supposed to be having fun. Effective canvassing is as fun as it gets.
Canvassing puts you right on the front lines of the battle for freedom & liberty.
Savor every moment as our campaign continues to create history.
